It is a procedure to restore proper blood flow to the brain. The carotid artery carries the necessary blood to the brain and to the face, there is a carotid artery on each side of the neck. The blood flow in this artery can be partially or totally blocked by fatty material called plaque, this blockage can reduce the blood supply to the brain and can cause a cerebrovascular (stroke). There are two procedures to treat a carotid artery that contains plaque buildup: endarterectomy surgery or angioplasty with stenting.
