A chalazion is a benign and painless lump or nodule located within the upper or lower eyelid. Chalazia come from internally healed hens that are no longer infectious. These cysts-like nodules form around a sebaceous gland (meibomian), inside the eyelid, causing redness and swelling of the eyelids. The contents of a chalazion may include pus and obstructed sebaceous secretions (lipids) that usually help lubricate the eye but can no longer drain.
