Paracentesis is a procedure in which a thin needle or tube is placed in the abdomen to remove fluid from the peritoneal cavity (the space inside the abdomen that contains the intestines, stomach, and liver), for analysis or for empty the peritoneal cavity of ascites (paracentesis evacuadora). The paracentesis evacuadora is one of the treatments of the ascites of the cirrhotic patient that is not controlled with diuretics, and sometimes of the peritoneal carcinomatosis with ascites to tension.
