Intrastromal or intracorneal ring for keratoconus (each eye)
Intrastromal rings or also called intracorneal rings, are an alternative for the treatment of keratoconus (a corneal disease that consists of the deformation of this tissue and that acquires a cone shape), which causes a progressive alteration of vision making it increasingly blurred. This treatment is usually combined with phakic lens implantation and / or corneal crosslinking.
Intrastromal rings are semi-circular segments of acrylic material and of variable thickness and length. They are used to reinforce the cornea and to slow down the progression of keratoconus and the refractive defects it causes, especially astigmatism. For this reason, this technique mainly benefits patients in whom the disease is not in very advanced stages and to avoid reaching a corneal transplant.
