The cornea is the transparent external lens on the front of the eye. Corneal transplantation or keratoplasty involves the replacement of damaged or diseased corneal tissue with healthy corneal tissue from a donor, anterior lamellar corneal transplantation (DALK) is used in diseases of the anterior layers of the cornea (in cases where that the endothelium is healthy) such as keratoconus, corneal scars, corneal dystrophies. This type of transplant replaces the epithelium, the Bowmann's Membrane and the anterior stroma.
