Diagnosis: To diagnose skin cancer, the doctor will likely do the following: Examine the skin. The doctor may look at the skin to determine if the changes it is undergoing are skin cancer. Remove a sample of suspicious skin for analysis (skin biopsy). The doctor may remove suspicious-looking skin for a biopsy to determine if you have skin cancer, and if so, what type it is.
The two most common types of cancer: Basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. They usually form on the head, face, neck, hands, and arms. Another type of skin cancer, melanoma, is more dangerous but less common.
Surgery is a common treatment for skin cancers, different surgical techniques can be used. The options depend on the type of skin cancer, how large the cancer is, the location of the cancer in the body, and other factors.
Treatment: Surgery can often be done in the doctor's office or clinic using a local anesthetic (medicine used to numb the area). For certain skin cancers with a high risk of spread, other treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy, will sometimes be given after surgery.
