Esophageal dilation is an outpatient medical procedure that involves dilating or widening a narrowed area of the esophagus.
Healing of the esophagus due to acid reflux in people with heartburn is the most common cause, while less common causes are networks or rings (thin layers of excess tissue), esophageal cancer, scarring after radiation treatment or a disorder in the way the esophagus moves.
