Prognathism (jaw malformation)
Prognathism or prominent jaw is the forward movement of the lower jaw with respect to the upper jaw. This causes a person's chin to project forward and that their face shows a marked asymmetry, causing problems to properly close the mouth, difficulties in speaking, biting or chewing, in addition to experiencing chronic pain in the jaw joint.
Prognathism is corrected by orthognathic surgery, which is a surgical intervention that is responsible for correcting dento-cranio-maxillofacial deformities to achieve the perfect balance between all facial features of the patient. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, which does not present any pain for the patient and the scar is invisible, since the surgery is performed through incisions inside the mouth.
