Acetabular dysplasia, or hip dysplasia, refers to a hip socket that is shallow and does not completely cover the head of the femur (hip). The result is excessive mobility or tension in the hip joint that can cause pain.
Surgery to reposition the hip socket is periacetabular osteotomy (OPA), a surgical procedure that allows the acetabulum to be repositioned in a more stable position that provides more appropriate coverage of the femoral head. The OPA operation improves hip function, reduces pain and slows the progression of damage within the joint.
