Stapedectomy is a surgical technique that is used in otolaryngology to treat certain types of deafness. It is indicated in case of hearing loss caused by otosclerosis or otospongiosis. The otosclerosis is due to loss of mobility between the chain of ossicles that form the middle ear so that it stops transmitting the sound thus causing a deafness that, sometimes, is accompanied by noise (buzzing) and dizziness. The name of the intervention comes from the term stapedio (stirrup) and the suffix took that means to cut.
