Bunion surgery usually consists of an incision above or to the side of the joint of the big toe and the removal or realignment of the soft tissue and bone. This is done to relieve pain (there is no guarantee that it will relieve pain completely) and to restore normal alignment of the joint, small wires, screws or plates may be used to keep the bones in place. Women are the most affected by bunions.
