It is a technique of ocular microsurgery that is used to remove the vitreous, that is, the transparent gel that fills the ocular cavity. During vitrectomy, the ophthalmologist removes part or all of the vitreous humor from the middle part of the eye, the vitreous humor is replaced by a solution of salt water (saline) or a gas or oil bubble.
