Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes and one of the main causes of blindness, occurs when diabetes damages the small blood vessels of the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue located in the back of the eye. Laser surgery can be used to help seal the blood vessels that suffer losses or it can also help shrink the blood vessels and prevent them from growing again, this can decrease the swelling of the retina. In some cases, more than one treatment is necessary.
