During labor, the body produces prostaglandins naturally, which fulfill the function of preparing the cervix and helping to dilate it in response to contractions. When it is decided to induce labor and the cervix is not yet dilated, synthetic prostaglandins are used. Prostaglandins can also be used to expel the fetus in case of fetal death.
